Club Callsign Use Policy

The Federal Communications Commission grants amateur radio club station licenses to allow members of an amateur radio club to operate a station under a club call sign. The trustee of the club callsign is the license grantee. It conveys no operating privileges. Control operators should ensure compliance with all Part 97 regulations.

When operating BARS club stations (either physical or virtual), operators will use club call signs or when operating during club sponsored activities, unless granted an exemption by the trustee.

The Billerica Amateur Radio Society currently holds the following club station licenses:

W1HHGeneral PurposeAndy Wallace, KA1GTT

It is the duty of the trustee to act in the best interests of the club; after all, the station license belongs to the club, not to the trustee individually. The club station license trustee must designate control operators to ensure that the station is operated following club standards. The club license trustee will designate a club station control operator who must be someone trusted and who will follow all FCC rules at all times.

Individuals who have not paid for membership for the current year may not request use of the club callsign but may upgrade to “Associate Member” or “Full Members” by renewing or joining as a paid member.

Associate members in good standing with paid membership for the current year may generate a request but must identify a full member in good standing with paid membership for the current year as the control operator.

Full members in good standing with paid membership for the current year wishing to utilize a club call sign may request permission to use a club call sign by contacting the trustee directly and providing the completed form below, or an online form if one is provided, which will include the required information including:

  • Name of the BARS member requesting use of a club call sign (club station control operator)
  • Time period (dates and times) that the club call sign will be used
  • Description of the event where the club call sign will be used

Upon approval by the club station trustee, the club call sign can be used for the specified purpose and time period. It is the responsibility of the club station control operator to ensure that all on-air activities are in accordance with all applicable FCC rules and regulations.

Please see the club website, w1hh.org, for additional information about membership & benefits, including the use of club callsigns and equipment.

Please see ecfr.gov or arrl.org/part-97-amateur-radio for information about Part 97 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
