BARS Meeting Report for March 1, 2017

7:05 PM – K1TW, Tom, opens the meeting. Tom provided the coffee and donuts this time.

Tom started by encouraging people to check out the ARRL International DX SSB contest this upcoming weekend. The goal is to work stations outside North America.

The question for the roundtable was “are you operating the contest” or “what else is new?”

Fred, AC1BN, said he reached his 1-year licensed DXCC entity goal of 50. He is actually up to 52 now! Fred was also excited about having an Ameritron AL811E linear on the way.

Scotti/Mike (K1LTN) offered a Handi-Finder DF kit for auction. It sold for $5 and proceeds were donated to the Club.

Andy, KA1GTT, said he was going to the upcoming New England Antique Radio Club antique radio meet in Nashua the coming weekend. This event used to be held at the Westford Regency and is very popular. Antique radios as well as ham gear shows up. (Update: Andy attended and saw several boatanchors there, including a Collins KWM-2, Johnson Viking II, and a beautiful Collins 75A/32V pair.) Fred, AC1BN, said he would be interested in a Hallicrafters S-53A, his first receiver, if one showed up.

Tom, K1TW, encouraged folks to check out the ARRL code practice broadcasts, which are also available via Echolink at W1AW.

Scott, K1OA, said that he has been working Islands On the Air, and hoped others would take advantage of those operations. He said there are many more islands than DXCC entities!

Paul, K1VK, auctioned an ARRL Antenna book with CD-ROM. Fred, AC1BN, bought it for $10.

Tom, K1TW, said he enjoyed holding auctions and hopes members will bring ham-related items for sale at each meeting.

Tom, K1TW, described the possibility of a possible new Field Day location, the Harvard Sportsmen’s Club. The site was found by Jay, AI1EE. Tom rounded up a small team of members to check out the site that week and they will report on its suitability/availability for field day at the next meeting.

Seven BARS members signed up to join the Field Day planning committee at this meeting. More are welcome and their help needed. Contact K1TW.

Mike, KC1DKT, offered use of his generator should W1HH need it for FD.

There was no formal treasurer or VE report. (VE sessions were cancelled for February because of weather.)

Formal business finished at 8PM.

Dennis, W1UE, then provided an excellent slideshow and talk of his ham radio operations in India, Thailand, and Israel from 2016.

Presentation ended and meeting adjourned at 9:35.
